"School of Rock - The Musical" will rock the Broadway autumn. A first preview in New York promises great things. But can musical legend Andrew Lloyd Webber to build on its previous successes?
Proudly stands the famous composer Webber ("Cats", "Phantom of the Opera") in front of the small stage at the Gramercy Theatre in New York. The 67-year-old presented to approximately 200 guests an early version of his new musical "School of Rock". The Broadway play in the making based on the eponymous film of 2003: The rocking Looser Dewey Finn (Alex Brightman) cheats himself as a substitute teacher in an elite school to pay his rent. But when he recognizes the musical talent of his students, he is unceremoniously "rock" in the curriculum. Together with the children he wants to win a music competition.
How this can work, Lloyd Webber is testing in New York in an intimate round: "We carry the musical only on this small stage on, so that we can still try around with set design and props," says the 67-year-old. "However, the experimental phase is almost complete."
From November 6 on Broadway
Therefore, one can get a first impression of what can be seen of 6 November on the Broadway. As in the cinematic model is also the Musical co-star in Focus: Alex Brightman ("Matilda the Musical") located in almost every scene on the stage. There is singing, making music and he cries - and knows how to convince. Easily succeeds the transition from angry protest song for sensitive playing with the young actors.
Their interpretation of Lloyd Webber's musical compositions and pieces from the film is well managed. Again and again they elicit the audience applause. This is not only due to the small child pattern, also crafted to convince the 14 children: ". They play all their instruments Who does not believe, just have their little fingers look," says Lloyd Webber proudly. Now his piece only has to convince on the big stage.
