Some 77,000 immigrants reached the Greek coast since January to 34,442 -Front they did in the whole of 2014 and about 75,000 arrived in Italy.

"An average of one thousand people each day landed in the Greek islands, most fleeing the war in Syria," said William Spindler, spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

"The number of arrivals is so important that, despite all their efforts, the authorities and local communities and can not face them," said Spindler, who said "Greece needs help urgently" by Europe.

Macedonia and Serbia, where they usually spend the immigrants who arrived in Greece on their way to northern Europe, also need aid, according to UNHCR spokesman.
